The Region Lombardy
Lombardy is one of the largest regions in Italy. Its area, which stretches from the Alps to the Po Valley, results in a great variety of landscapes. The unique charm is the landscape of the Alps with the Valchiavenna, Valtellina and Valcamonica. For fans of winter sports, modern facilities can be found in places such as Tonale, Bormio, Livigno and Madesimo.
Another characteristic landscape of the region is offered by the rolling hills of the Franciacorta area, famous for its vineyards and wine production.
The great lakes are also a charming sight. The west side of Lake Garda, with Sirmione and other famous cities, is a very interesting destination. Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are also extremely beautiful, surrounded by castles, parks and charming villages.
Typical for the region are the large, flat expanses of the lower Po plain covered with water and cultivated with rice fields. The typical landscape of the Lomellina, the land of the harrows, is rich in folklore and traditions.
Due to its special geographical location and land resources, it is a particularly rich country in which nature, history, art and culture harmoniously overflow with innovation, technology, fashion, fun and modernity.
The natural landscape, art and architecture of Lombardy offers tourists many attractions.
Unesco sites in the region
There are five UNESCO sites in the region: Mantua, Gonzaga and Sabbioneta, the “ideal city” of the Italian Renaissance; the Sacred Mountains, a dedicated route in Varese and Ossuccio; the prehistoric cave paintings of Valcamonica, the Rhaetian Railway, which runs through the mountainous landscapes of the Albula and Bernina; the nineteenth century industrial settlement of Crespi d’Adda and finally Milan, where the beautiful church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is located, where the fresco of the Last Supper was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
Milan – Capital of Lombardy
Also in Milan, the capital of the Lombardy region, architectural works such as the remarkable opera La Scala, the famous stage of the opera world, the Castello Sforzesco and the monumental cathedral, the church in white marble dedicated to “Maria nascente” can be found. In Monza you will find the natural park that houses the modern car racing track, the Villa Reale and the cathedral, in which the old “iron crown” is kept, where one of the nails of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is said to be kept.
Monastery of Brescia
Nice cities of Lombardy
In Brescia, the monastery of San Salvatore is of particular interest; in Cremona, the city of Renaissance buildings where the tradition of Stradivarius violin makers still lives.
Pavia is the city of a hundred towers, the Visconti castle and the university. Varese is the “garden of the province”, and Sondrio, with its magnificent Masegra Castle and its wonderful charm.
Lecco owes its fame to the famous novel “The Fiance” by Alessandro Manzoni.
In Bergamo is the Accademia Carrara, one of the largest Italian art galleries, the Colleoni Chapel and the Teatro Donizetti, which are dedicated to famous Bergamo citizens and composers of great renown.
The medieval city of Lodi is characterized by the arcades of Piazza della Vittoria, on which the Duomo and the Municipal House are located.
Finally Como, at the head of the western arm of the lake, is known for its beautiful villas, especially Villa Olmo, an imposing neoclassical building.
