The Umbria region
This region is located in the “green heart” of Italy and is one the five regions of Italy without access to the sea. Umbria is bordered by Tuscany to the west and north, Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. It is the fourth smallest region in Italy after the Aosta Valley, Basilicata and Molise.
This region is characterised by extensive mountain ridges with pasture and arable farming. In the east there is the Apennine range, with the highest peak Monte Vettore (2478 m). There are several river systems here, such as the Tiber, the Topino coming from the Apennines, the Nera, whose valley is characterized by hilly, picturesque landscapes.
Umbria is also the land of Lake Trasimeno, one of the largest lakes in central Italy. Here you can admire the remains of Etruscan settlements. In the town of Castiglione del Lago, the magic of nature and the tranquility of the lake come together. At Terni are the Marmore waterfalls, known as the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe. Many visitors take advantage of the excellent kayak and canoe trips. The many hiking trails for exploring the landscape are also fun for children.
Gubbio and other beautiful places in Umbria
Gubbio is the oldest city in Umbria. The cathedral (Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo), the Palazzo Consoli (symbol of the city) and the Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale) are just a few examples.
Interesting folkloric events take place in Gubbio. These include the candle run (Corsa dei Ceri) in honor of the patron saint of the city and the Palio della Balestra (crossbow shooting) in memory of the glorious history.
Orvieta is also one of the most important towns in Umbria. In Orvieto you will experience the famous cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with its two spiral staircases with 248 steps that reach the water at a depth of about 60 meters without touching each other.
Spoleto seduces and fascinates with its intense history, with more than 2500 years, from prehistory to the present. This city is now home to this vast heritage with its archaeological remains, monuments and palaces, places of culture and art, knowledge and education. It forms the backdrop for the international festival dei due Mondi, an opportunity to immerse yourself in an artistic atmosphere.
For those interested in art and spirituality, a visit to the world-famous city of Assisi is a must. The city of Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many great masterpieces. Assisi is the city of St. Francis, patron saint of Italy with the basilica dedicated to him with his grave.
Perugia is the capital of the region. In the old town there are a large number of important works of art and museums.
History of Umbria
There are two other gems in the province of Terni, each related to the history and the area. The first is the historic Carsulae, an old Roman city on the Via Flaminia. In addition to the ruins of public buildings, we can also find the Damiano Arch here, with a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape. The second gem is the petrified forest of Danurobba. This beautiful forest, which already existed three million years ago, forms a moon-like landscape with the well-preserved trunks.
The charm of this region arises from the fusion of art and nature, from the calm and serenity that radiate from its places.
In Umbria you can experience nature up close thanks to the wine routes that satisfy all the senses. Not only are wine tastings a must, the gastronomic and craft traditions can also be admired (pottery, glassblowing and carpentry workshops).
Umbria is also popular for many visitors for the protected designation of origin known as DOP olive oil.
