The Sardinia region!
The island of Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean. It is 202 km from mainland Italy (190 km from the Monte Argentario peninsula), with the Tyrrhenian Sea in between. The popular Italian holiday island is only 184 km north of Tunisia. The French island of Corsica is separated by the 12 km wide Strait of Bonifacio (Bocche di Bonifacio).
The climate of Sardinia is essentially Mediterranean with warm spring and autumn, hot summer and mild winter. This makes the island a much-visited and sought-after island, especially in the warm spring and autumn months.
Sardinia is an island that enchants its visitors and tourists with the diversity and contrasts. The heavenly colors of a traditional country in a rough and unsullied nature. Mountainous landscapes without peaks, small fallow areas, beautiful lakes and naturally preserved forests form a healthy habitat for deer, wild horses and birds of prey. A particularly popular area is the largest mountain range in Sardinia Gennargentu with the highest mountain on the island “Punta La Marmora”. Here you will find picturesque scenarios and impressive animal species such as mouflons, golden eagles and Sardinian deer.
Costa Smeralda of Sardinia
The green Costa Smeralda with breathtaking bays and dreamy beaches make the island of Sardinia an incomparable holiday destination. The Costa Smeralda rightly bears its name with the turquoise-green shining sea on light sandy beaches. Special are the great hilly landscapes with dark macchia and bright white granite rocks and idyllic mountain villages. Popular places on the Costa Smeralda are Porto Cervo, known as a lively and modern tourist port. Also the renowned Porto Rotondo with a view of the wide Gulf of Cugnana, characterized by picturesque squares, villas and beautiful nature.
History of Sardinia
Sardinia offers tourists interested in history and culture numerous sights from bygone eras, which give a lively picture of their eventful and often tragic history. On an approx. 200 km long journey from Cagliari to Nuoro you will experience the remarkable and prehistoric towers, also called nuraghi, which played a central role in the life of the Sardinians for over eight centuries, but their function is still unclear today. These may be defensive castles, palaces, or places of worship. One of the most famous is the more than 3,500 year old nuragic settlement of Su Nuraxi in Barumini, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 due to its uniqueness and size and is one of the most important nuragic complexes in the world.
Also worth seeing are numerous excavations from the Bronze Age such as prehistoric giant graves, fairy graves and other megalithic graves in which the dead were buried in earlier times. The oldest excavations include the menhirs Cort ‘e Semmuccu and Cenna Prunas as well as the Domus de janas.
Cagliari capital of the region Sardinia
Cagliari capital of the region and main port of the island is an ideal starting point for a cultural trip through Sardinia. Particularly worth seeing in the city itself is the national archaeological museum with the world’s most important nuragic culture and the Roman amphitheater.
This Italian island offers a multitude of possibilities, whether a cultural, hiking or beach vacation. And then there is the excellent italian cuisine.
